New Orleans, LA, February 13, 2019 – MassMutual Foundation’s FutureSmart Challenge and the New Orleans Pelicans brought together middle school students from Greater New Orleans area schools to talk financial education at the Smoothie King Center.
MassMutual Foundation’s FutureSmart Challenge is a national program that provides financial education to middle school students and offers them the opportunity to learn skills needed to make sound choices for their personal financial futures. At each event, students participate in an educational seminar hosted by award-winning actor and best-selling author Hill Harper and learn about the importance of smart money management, why a higher education is essential to their financial success, and the difference between “smart money” and “dumb money.”
During this special event, students also heard from New Orleans Pelicans star center, Jahlil Okafor who shared his thoughts on education, careers, and finances. The Pelicans Dance Team, Pierre the Pelican, and the Swoop Troop also lit up the arena with engaging entertainment.
Following the FutureSmart Challenge, students who participated will be taught Junior Achievement classroom curriculum led by local Magnolia Wealth Strategies, a MassMutual firm representatives and Junior Achievement of Greater New Orleans affiliate volunteers.
“Magnolia Wealth Strategies, a MassMutual firm is proud to partner with MassMutual Foundation to expand financial education in our community through the FutureSmart Challenge,” said Rich Schega, General Agent of Magnolia Wealth Strategies, a MassMutual firm. “It’s important that our young future leaders feel empowered to take positive steps toward a successful career and financial security for themselves, their families and their communities.”
New Orleans is the fourth stop on the 2018-2019 multi-city tour of MassMutual Foundation’s FutureSmart Challenge. Since 2014, more than 1 million students have benefited from the FutureSmart program through the Challenges and FutureSmart digital program, an online education program for students delivered in schools across the U.S. Students can also extend the lessons they learn at the Challenges and in the classroom through the free FutureSmart app. The FutureSmart program aims to impact the financial literacy of two million students by 2020.
